Is Remotion Free? License, Commercial Use and Pricing (2026)

Is Remotion Free? License, Commercial Use and Pricing (2026)

Yes, Remotion is free for eligible users. The current Free License covers individuals, for-profit organizations with up to three employees, non-profit or not-for-profit organizations, and people evaluating Remotion without commercial use.

Eligible users may use the full software to create commercial or non-commercial videos and images. A user or organization outside those categories needs a Company License.

Remotion publishes its source code, but it is not open source under the Open Source Initiative definition. Remotion describes its proprietary license as source-available.

Who can use Remotion for free?

The current repository license lists four Free License categories.

User or organizationCurrent licenseCommercial videos and images
IndividualFree LicenseAllowed
For-profit organization with up to 3 employeesFree LicenseAllowed
Non-profit or not-for-profit organizationFree LicenseAllowed
Non-commercial evaluationFree LicenseNot yet using Remotion commercially
Anyone outside the Free License categoriesCompany LicenseAllowed under the Company License

Agency, client and shared-project arrangements can be more complicated. Check Remotion's official License FAQ for the entity that owns and operates the project.

Is Remotion free for commercial use?

Yes, if you qualify for the Free License. The license explicitly permits eligible users to create videos and images commercially or non-commercially. The free version is not a personal-use-only edition and does not remove product functionality.

Commercial output is different from reselling the framework. The license does not allow you to copy or modify Remotion code for the purpose of selling, renting, licensing, relicensing or sublicensing your own derivative of Remotion.

How much does a Remotion Company License cost?

Remotion displayed the following Company License options on September 11, 2026. These are current prices, not permanent guarantees.

Remotion for Creators

$25 per seat per month, with no seat minimum or minimum spend when purchased alone. Remotion describes this option for low-volume creation without automation.

Remotion for Automators

$0.01 per successful render, with a $100 monthly minimum. This option covers automated pipelines, video editors, prompt-to-video products and other automated uses that require a Company License.

Enterprise

Starts at $500 per month for custom terms, billing, compliance, support and advanced requirements.

Creators and Automators are not interchangeable discount plans. They cover different ways of using Remotion. If your organization uses both, Remotion currently applies a combined $100 monthly minimum, with seat spending counted toward it.

What counts as a Remotion render?

For the Automators license, one successful video, audio, GIF, PDF or still-image generation counts as one render. Studio and Player previews do not count.

Free License users do not buy render credits from Remotion merely because they automate a workflow. Their own machines, cloud compute, storage and other services still have separate operating costs.

Do the Remotion 5.0 terms apply now?

No. Remotion has published upcoming terms for version 5.0, but the page says they take effect when Remotion 5.0 is released. The latest official release checked on September 11, 2026 was v4.0.523.

Do not apply future v5 rules to a current 4.x project. Check the installed version and the current official license before making a production or purchasing decision.

What does the Remotion license not include?

A software license does not include finished video design, development time or general rendering infrastructure. A team still creates the compositions, defines data inputs, reviews Agent-written code, tests output and operates the render environment.

It also does not clear third-party assets such as music, fonts, footage, APIs or trademarks. Those rights remain separate from the Remotion license.

When you need finished Motion Graphics instead

Remotion is a strong production surface when you need a custom programmatic video system. But many people searching for a free video framework actually need the finished Motion Graphics, not the framework itself.

AutoAE begins with professional Motion Graphics in which the composition, typography, pacing, transitions, UI interaction and layered 2.5D or 3D motion have already been designed. It supports complete Viral Reels, pure-MG videos, coordinated SaaS Launch scenes, YouTube Motion Graphics and Product Showcase ads.

Users or compatible Agents apply real text, images, video, screenshots, logos, icons and supported brand inputs, then render the result. AutoAE is not a traditional timeline editor, so longer projects can combine the exported Motion Graphics with voice-over, music and B-roll in any external editor.

Remotion license FAQ

Direct answers for common licensing and workflow questions.

Is Remotion completely free?

Remotion is free only for the categories listed in its Free License: individuals, for-profit organizations with up to three employees, nonprofits and non-commercial evaluation. Other users need a Company License.

Can I use Remotion commercially for free?

Yes, if you qualify for the Free License. Eligible users may create commercial videos and images with the full software.

Is Remotion open source?

No. Remotion says it is source-available but not open source under the Open Source Initiative definition. Its repository uses the proprietary Remotion License.

Does a four-person company need a Remotion license?

An ordinary for-profit organization with four or more employees falls outside the current Free License threshold. Agency, client and jointly operated projects can involve additional rules, so check the official FAQ for the actual project structure.

Is the Free License a trial?

No. Eligible users receive the full software without a time limit stated in the current Free License. Non-commercial evaluation is also a separate eligibility category.

Is there a feature difference between free and paid Remotion?

Remotion's FAQ says there is no functionality difference. The Company License adds permitted use for organizations outside the free categories and prioritized support.

How much is Remotion for Creators?

The official licensing page displayed $25 per seat per month on September 11, 2026. Check the current page before purchasing because pricing can change.

How much is Remotion for Automators?

The official page displayed $0.01 per successful render with a $100 monthly minimum on September 11, 2026. This option applies to automation use that requires a Company License.

Does previewing in Remotion count as a paid render?

No. Remotion's current FAQ says Studio and Player previews do not count. A successful video, audio, GIF, PDF or still-image generation counts as one render for Automators billing.

Can I modify Remotion?

The current license allows modification for your custom use case or to contribute improvements. It does not allow copying or modifying Remotion in order to sell or license your own derivative of Remotion.

Can I build a prompt-to-video product with Remotion?

Remotion's FAQ allows services that generate Remotion code and render it, including user editing of initially generated code. Licensing depends on Free License eligibility and the actual service structure. Generic rendering of arbitrary user-supplied Remotion projects is treated differently, so hosted services should confirm their case with Remotion.

Does Remotion include cloud rendering?

No general-purpose hosting or rendering infrastructure is included with the license. You run Remotion locally, client-side, on premises or through your own cloud setup, and those operating costs remain separate.

Are the published Remotion 5.0 terms active?

Not as of September 11, 2026. The v5 Terms page says those terms take effect when Remotion 5.0 is released, while the latest official release checked was v4.0.523.

Does Remotion's license cover music, fonts or footage?

No. Rights for third-party media, fonts, APIs and trademarks are separate. A valid Remotion license does not automatically clear those assets.

What if I need Motion Graphics but not a programmable video framework?

AutoAE starts with professionally completed Motion Graphics that users or compatible Agents adapt with real content and supported brand inputs. It removes the need to design and code the motion system from zero.
