How to Edit Videos With GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT (Remotion Plugin Guide)

GPT-6 Astra edits video in ChatGPT by running the work on your computer. The most common setup installs Remotion's plugin, hands Astra your raw recording plus a set of editing rules, and gets back an MP4, a caption file and an editable Remotion project. Astra can also drive a desktop editor through computer use, or call a video model through the fal plugin to change what is inside a shot. Which route fits depends on whether you need cuts and captions, code-built graphics, or new footage.
Three ways Astra can edit a video
fal's October 1, 2026 guide splits Astra video editing into three routes. They solve different problems, so it helps to pick one before you write a prompt.
Route
What it changes
Setup
Cost beyond ChatGPT
Codex with Remotion, FFmpeg or HyperFrames
Cuts, conversions, captions and code-built graphics
Remotion plugin, local tools such as FFmpeg and Node.js
Open-source tools; a Remotion Company License if your company needs one
Computer use in a desktop editor
Anything your editor can do
Computer Use plugin; Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions on macOS
Your editor's subscription
fal plugin
What is inside the frame, re-rendered by a video model

Per run; fal lists $0.42 to $1.36 per five-second edit depending on resolution
The rest of this guide covers the first route, because it is the one most people mean when they share an Astra-edited video: talking-head footage cut tight, captioned and dressed with graphics.
Step 1: Install the Remotion plugin
Remotion maintains the plugin. In the ChatGPT desktop app, open the Plugins tab, search for "Remotion" and install it. In a new project, typing $remotion in the prompt calls the plugin, which also brings Remotion's Agent Skills so Astra writes code the way Remotion expects.
Step 2: Pick Astra and let it work locally
In Rob Cressy's walkthrough, the setting is Work, then GPT-6 Astra, then the High effort level. If Astra needs to read files on your computer, such as your recording and a folder of B-roll, use the desktop app with Work locally selected. OpenAI rolled Astra out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts after its September 3, 2026 launch, so check that it appears in your model list.
Step 3: Hand over the footage and the facts
Drag the raw recording into the chat. Then give Astra the details it can't guess:
the platform and aspect ratio (vertical for Reels and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube)
the target length
the exact call to action, word for word
optionally, one reference video you like and a sentence on why, plus a folder of B-roll with notes on where each clip belongs
Step 4: Give it editing rules, not just a request
"Edit this video" gets a generic cut. The walkthroughs that get good first drafts paste a written set of editing standards along with the prompt. Yours can be short. Cover the opening (what must be on screen in the first two seconds), pacing (cut pauses and retakes but keep natural delivery), captions (accurate, synced, with key words emphasized), zooms (how often, how strong), graphics (show real screens and products when the speaker mentions them), sound (voice first, music under it) and the ending (the CTA on screen long enough to read). Writing these once and reusing them is what makes the second video faster than the first.
Step 5: Review at phone size and give notes by timestamp
Treat the first render as a draft. Watch it at the size your audience will, with sound on. Then write each note as a timestamp or a spoken phrase, followed by the exact change. Cressy's guide gives this example: "At 0:00, show the title immediately with no fade." Notes in that form leave nothing for Astra to interpret, so the second version moves toward what you want instead of sideways.
Step 6: Download the outputs
When the cut is approved, the Remotion route returns three things: the MP4, a caption file, and the Remotion project. Keep the project. Next time you can change a caption, swap a clip or render a vertical version without starting over.
What a full Astra run can look like
MindStudio described one creator's end-to-end run on September 5, 2026: Astra checked sources, wrote a script, sent segments to an avatar and voice-clone service, assembled the timeline with transitions and sound, then transcribed the export to compare it against the script. The run took about 50 minutes and roughly $60 in API costs. MindStudio is clear that it is a single self-reported example, run in a faster and more expensive mode, with no record of how much cleanup happened afterward.
Where the graphics hit a ceiling
Going by these walkthroughs, Astra's strength is the editing itself: finding the clean takes, cutting, captioning and timing. The graphics it adds are still Remotion code, so they are limited to what a web page can draw, which is why titles and callouts in these videos often look flat. Why Claude and GPT-6 Astra Remotion videos look flat explains the cause and shows a side-by-side test.
If an intro, logo reveal or launch moment needs to look designed, you can bring in a clip instead of asking Astra to build one. The AutoAE Skill also runs in Codex: AutoAE's Motion Graphic Agent picks a professionally designed template, fills it with your text and images, and returns an MP4 that Astra can place in the Remotion project like any other clip.
FAQ
Which ChatGPT plans include GPT-6 Astra?
OpenAI announced availability for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, rolled out in stages after a limited start, and through the API. If you don't see it yet, the rollout may not have reached your account.
Can Astra edit in Premiere Pro or Final Cut?
Through computer use, Astra can operate a desktop editor the way a person would, clicking through its tools. That route keeps your existing project files, but it works at the speed of the interface and needs screen recording and accessibility permissions on macOS.
Do I need to pay for Remotion?
Individuals, non-profits and companies with up to three employees can use Remotion for free, including commercial videos. Larger companies need a Company License. See Is Remotion Free?
