Video automation isn't one category. It's three architectures with different cost models, and most "top 20 video automation tools" lists blur them together. The three: video as code, template plus data, and brief to render. Pick the architecture first; the tool choice inside each lane is the easy part.

Architecture 1: video as code

Frameworks like Remotion and Revideo treat a video as a program: TypeScript in, deterministic frames out. Once built, a template renders a thousand personalized variants without a human touching a timeline.

  • Cost model: engineering hours. The framework may be free; the pipeline isn't.
  • Right for: product teams shipping video as a feature (per-user recap videos, programmatic ads inside your own app).
  • Breaks when: design iteration outpaces engineering. Every visual change is a code change.

Architecture 2: template plus data
